capi: Coalesced authority, power, and influence = control. An individual or a team can hold capi. It has coalesced when all elements are brought together so that the person or team has the authority to decide, the cooperation of those needed to implement the decision (power), and specific knowledge of the information or technology required to make and implement the decision (influence).
AUTHORANCE: The totality of authority, power, and influence brought to bear on an issue. Authorance is required to perform a responsibility effectively.
AUTHORIZED POWER: The right to punish or reward. For instance, when someone has the right to promote, to increase salaries, and approve vacation time, he has authorized power.
INDIRECT POWER: When a person appears to be influencing others but there is an implied threat in what that person is saying, and thus others do what that person tells them to, not because they believe in what the individual is saying (i), but because they fear the repercussions of refusing to comply (p).
INFLUENCE: The ability to make another person do something without using either power or authority; that is, when one person truly convinces another 22 people to do something. Pure influence occurs when the person to be influenced believes in the activity and is coopted enough to do whatever needs to be done of her own volition.
INFLUENCING AUTHORITY: When the person with authority (the right to say what to do) can also convince people of his validity. Often called professional authority or authority by acceptance.
